Richard Noble's ThrustSSC dual jet-engined rocket car set the first ( and 2nd )
supersonic land-speed records ( in October 1997 ) in the Nevada desert by moving faster than the speed of sound. The first attempt was timed at 759.333 mph.
Later, The newer record of 766.109 mph was achieved on the second attempt.
No serious challenge has come forth since.
