"Slowhand" Eric Clapton at Royal Albert Hall
Update: HRH Queen Elizabeth II bestowed honours on Eric Clapton (& Ray Davies/The Kinks) granting a Commanders of the Order of the British Empire on December 30, 2003.
Clapton found fame as a member of the 1960's R&B band The Yardbirds, was a founder of the rock trio Cream, but gained the greatest renown for his solo career, with songs like "Layla," "After Midnight" and "Tears in Heaven." He has won 15 Grammy awards over the years.
